Aerosol Fire Extinguishers: A Practical Guide for Users

With the advancement of technology, new alternatives or supplements are emerging for applications previously difficult to address with traditional fire extinguishers like dry powder and carbon dioxide. These include thermal aerosol fire extinguishers. This new type of fire extinguishing device, due to its compact size, long lifespan, and residue-free nature, is suitable for firefighting in enclosed spaces and is gaining popularity among businesses and households.

What is a thermal aerosol fire extinguisher?

A thermal aerosol fire extinguisher uses a chemical reaction to produce an aerosol extinguishing agent. It releases fine solid particles that suppress the flames, extinguishing the fire. Compared to traditional fire extinguishers, aerosol fire extinguishers offer advantages such as high fire extinguishing efficiency, minimal environmental pollution, and ease of use.

How effective are they?

Aerosol fire extinguishers rely on the ultrafine particles formed during the release of the agent to directly disrupt free radical reactions in the flame, quickly terminating combustion. They are effective against Class A, B, C, and E fires. It's important to note that thermal aerosol fire extinguishers offer the best firefighting effectiveness in enclosed or semi-enclosed environments, making them particularly effective in unattended areas. However, they also have limitations. Due to their small size, the effectiveness of thermal aerosol extinguishers in open-air fires or large-scale combustion is diminished due to diffusion. Therefore, they are more suitable for specialized firefighting in confined spaces.

Advantages of Thermal Aerosol Fire Extinguishers

1. Compact and lightweight, they address firefighting vulnerabilities in enclosed spaces.

For firefighting in electrical cabinets, computer rooms, or large equipment, preventing internal hazards has always been a challenge. However, aerosols are compact and lightweight, allowing them to be installed in these compact spaces.

2. They leave no residue, preventing secondary damage.

For delicate equipment like data centers, server rooms, and distribution cabinets, the damage caused by dust or corrosive substances left behind by using inappropriate fire extinguishers can be just as severe as the fire itself. The ultrafine particles released by thermal aerosol extinguishers quickly interrupt the combustion reaction without depositing corrosive residue, making them an ideal choice for protecting delicate equipment. 

3. Long Service Life and No Maintenance

A thermal aerosol fire extinguisher typically has a service life of 10 years. Unless triggered or damaged, it requires minimal maintenance, making it ideal for equipment spaces that are infrequently used.

4. Automatic Fire Extinguishing in Small or Special Spaces

Environments such as vehicle engine compartments, electrical cabinets, and ship cabins are often cramped, making traditional fire extinguishers difficult to operate. Thermal aerosols are small in size and automatically release once the temperature reaches a threshold to extinguish the fire.

Service Life and Maintenance

A significant advantage of thermal aerosol fire extinguishers is that they are virtually maintenance-free.

Lifespan: Typically 10–15 years, much longer than the 3–5 years of dry powder fire extinguishers.

Inspection: Only regular visual inspections of the casing for damage or moisture are required; annual inspections like those required for traditional fire extinguishers are not required.

Storage: Simply protect from direct sunlight and moisture. No specialized cylinder refilling or maintenance personnel are required.

This significantly reduces long-term costs for users.

Where are they suitable?

 Hot aerosol fire extinguishers are designed for firefighting in confined spaces and are suitable only for specific environments, making them unsuitable for everyday use. The following are some examples of their application scenarios:

Data centers, computer rooms, and low-voltage electrical rooms, where there are many precision equipment;

Factories or substations with numerous electrical cabinets and distribution boxes;

Engine compartments or circuits in vehicles, ships, and aircraft.

Hot aerosol fire extinguishers are compact and lightweight, leave no residue after release, are harmless to electronic equipment, and require no frequent maintenance. They address the pain points of fire safety in confined spaces. However, they cannot replace traditional fire extinguishers; they can only serve as a more professional, environmentally friendly, and convenient supplemental solution for specialized environments.

If you need a firefighting solution for high-value or sensitive environments, such as electronic equipment, cars, and electrical cabinets, a hot aerosol fire extinguisher is undoubtedly the better choice. However, for everyday firefighting needs, traditional dry powder, foam, or water-based fire extinguishers should be used in conjunction.

For individual users, they can be used as a supplement to vehicle fire extinguishers or home backup systems, making them highly effective in critical situations.
